dogs and cats get heartworm disease from the bit of a mosquito the baby heartworms, which are called microfilaria, circulate out in the bloodstream a mosquito will bite an infected pet and then transfer it to a susceptible pet. after transmission, those microfilaria migrate in the body toward the heart and then an adult heartworm grows in the chambers of the heart.
Symptoms Of Heartworms In Dogs, it's a worm that's shaped like spaghetti and it's right in the chambers of the heart where the blood is being pumped around. they will restrict the flow of blood and they also cause serious reactions as well. cats do get heartworm disease. it's a little bit different than the disease in dogs. cats' bodies are much more reactive and even one heartworm can cause serious problems for them.
while cats can be tested for heartworm, they may not test positive even if they are infected. if you notice your pet experiencing behavioral changes or signs of respiratory distress, you should take them to a vet. the risk for heartworm is more common in certain times of the year but since mosquitoes can overwinter in many places we recommend year-round preventives for all dogs and cats, even if they're indoor only.
many heartworm preventives protect against other parasites as well internal parasites such as roundworm, hookworm, tapeworm and whipworm. and also some external parasites such as fleas, ticks and mites
some of these can also be zoonotic meaning that they can be passed to you or other human members of your family.
