you might think you're saving money bynot replacing your old or broken windows but in fact, those old windows could be costing youmoney in energy loss. with a replacement window, you can dothe repair yourself and make your house look a lot better in the process.

as well as remove the existing sashes.replacement windows come in two basic types. the first i'm gonna show you is forexisting wood-framed windows in houses that have aluminum, vinyl orwood-lap siding, or a brick exterior typically found in the eastern part ofthe country. this installation will not work for existing vinyl window frames. the second type is aflush-flange application for aluminum sliding windows in stucco homes, typically found in the western part ofthe country. and some other regions. now keep in mind that different brandwindows install differently,

so be sure to check the manufacturer'sinstructions. also, if any party this installation seems too difficult, well lowe's can professionally install yourwindow for you. let's start with the eastern wood frame. now before you remove the old window,carefully inspect your frame for water damage. if your frame is soft from extensivewater damage, you'll most likely need a complete framereplacement. however if just the sash has

water damage, you can install the window. also check tomake sure your window frame is square. to know what size windowyou'll need, measure inside the pocket of the frame at the top, middle, and bottom. also measure theheight from the highest point on the sill, at the left, middle, and right. then takethe smallest of those measures to lowe's associate to make sure you get the rightsize window. once you have your new one, then you canremove the parts of your old window,

and i'll show you how to do that on twodifferent windows. the first is typical of older construction. square the paintor varnish along the interior sash stops. use a putty knife and a pry bar tocarefully remove the stops. if you have them, cut the balance cordson the bottom sash and just let the weights fall. now you can take out the bottom sash.then remove the parting stops. lower the top sash. and again, if youhave them, cut the balance cords. remove the top sash being careful not todamage the exterior blind stop. next remove thebalance cord pulleys.

if they can't be removed just pound theminside the frame with a hammer. many newer windows like this one work alittle bit differently. with a sash open, i'll remove the screwsthen hold this plastic stop. then pull out the stop. now i can lowerthe sash, cut the cords, and remove it. then i'llremove the top sash the same way. and finally i'll take out the remainingstops. and that'll do it for wood frame window removal. to see the next step, watch "howto install a replacement window: east" at lowes.com/videos. ifyou have a stucco house with aluminum

frames, start by measuring the width of the interiorframe at the top, middle, and bottom. also measure the height from the highestpoint on the sill, at the left, middle, and right. give thesmallest width and height measurements to lowe's, and an associate will help you get the right window. to remove the sash, open window, lift it up and tilt the bottom out. beforeyou remove the fixed sash, it's a good idea to tape the glass justin case it should break. then take the
